最近、僕の好きなパン屋、「PAUL」で朝ごはんを食べた。今、クリスマスツリーがある。京都ではたくさんの美しいクリスマスツリーがあるが、この懐かしくて伝統てなクリスマスツリーが大好き。ヨーロッパではクリスマスツリーの文化は大切で、すごく歴史的。クリスマスよりクリスマスツリーの方が古い文化。最初にクリスマスツリーは冬至の特別で大切な物だった。僕はキリスト教の人じゃないので、冬至ツリーが大好き。

「Where is」も大丈夫だが、「Where would be」の方が丁寧です。

チャレンジ文法

あまり健康的じゃないけど、時々チェリオを飲む。ボトルで「Since 1965」が書かれている。僕は「Since 1963」！ 日本人にとって「since と for」の文法は難しいと思う。「Since」の場合、特別な時間からの事、例えば、

I have lived in Japan since 1999.

1999年から、日本に住んでいる。

I have not drunk alcohol since November 1^st.

11月１日から、お酒を飲んでいない。

「For」の場合、何かを数える。例えば、

I have lived in Japan for almost twenty years.

ほぼ20年、日本に住んでいる。

I haven’t drunk alcohol for 38 days.

38日間、お酒を飲んでいない。

The leaves were beautiful

Recently, I went to Nanzenji, the Autumn leaves were beautiful.
最近、南禅寺に行った、紅葉は美しかった。

チャレンジ文法

ほとんどの日本人はお寿司が好き。もし英語でその文を話したら、たいてい日本人は「Almost Japanese people like sushi〉と言うが、英語でその文は意味がない。ネイティブスピーカーは「Almost all Japanese people like sushi」と言う。もし「all」がなかったら、意味もない。

JR電車以外、ほとんどの日本の電車は定刻。

Except for JR trains, almost all Japanese trains are on time.

ほとんどの日本人は京都に行ったことがある。

Almost all Japanese people have been to Kyoto.

ほとんどない場合、「no」が要る。例えば。

納豆が好きなイギリス人はほとんどない。

Almost no British people like natto.

ほとんどのイギリス人が日本語を話せない。

Almost no British people speak Japanese.

もし英語で「ほとんど」を話したかったら、絶対「all」か「no」が要る。もし「Almost」だけを話したら、意味がほとんどない。

Go well together

カレーとライスはよく似合うね。たいてい日本人は英語で「curry and rice match」と言うが、ネイティブスピーカーは他の表現を使う。一番自然は「curry and rice go well together」。服も大丈夫、例えば「Your shirt and tie go well together」。本当に自然な英語の表現だが、カップルの場合、「They go well together」より「They are a good match」の方が自然。

Statues, leaves and chestnuts are countable nouns. 

数えられる名詞

Orange juice is sweet and healthy. 
オレンジジュースは甘くて健康的です。

European cheese is tasty but expensive. 
ヨーロッパのチーズはうまいけど、高いです。

Butter is delicious but unhealthy.
バターは美味しいけど、健康的じゃないです。

Orange juice, cheese and butter are uncountable nouns.

First time in a long time...

For the first time in a long time, I ate breakfast at Cafe de Crie on Teramachi. It was delicious and cheap, but I like Higashinotoin's Ueshima better. Ueshima's bread is more delicious than Cafe de Crie's.

久しぶりに寺町のCAFE de CRIEで朝御飯を食べた。美味しくて安かったが、東洞院の上島の方が好き。CAFE de CRIEより上島のパンの方が美味しい。

Adjectives (形容詞)

Which Mercedes-Benz do you like better?

英語を話すとき、たいてい日本人は一つの形容詞を使うが、二つの方がいい。
 
例えば、京都は美しくて歴史的です。
Kyoto is beautiful and Historical.
お寿司は美味しくて健康的です。
Sushi is tasty and healthy.

もし「and」を使ったら、二つのポジティブな形容詞または二つ

のネガティブな形容詞が使う。

もしポジティブな形容詞とネガティブな形容詞を使うならば、「but」を使う。

例えば　ベンツは素晴らしいけど、高いです。

Mercedes-Benz are wonderful, but expensive.

ドイツ語は楽しけど、難しい。

German is fun, but difficult.



ネイティブスピーカーは三つの形容詞をよく使う。

例えば、

イギリスは綺麗で伝統的だが、遠いです。

The UK is beautiful and traditional, but far away

地下鉄は安くて早いけど、込んでいる。

The subway is cheap and fast, but crowded.

Bakeries

Recently, I went to two new bakeries on Sanjo street. The first was a British bakery called Franze and Evans. It is bright and clean, and servers good pastries.
The second is called Paul and is a French bakery, it also serves very good food. I recommend both.

For class please think of some good restaurants and the food that they serve. We will talk about then in class.
